Moon Township, Pa. - Freshman guard Karon Abraham (Paterson, N.J. / Harp Academy) of the Robert Morris University men's basketball earned the first weekly honor of his career Monday when he was tabbed the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week.
Abraham was bestowed the honor after coming off the bench and leading the Colonials with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including a 6-for-9 performance from long range, in a 59-54 setback against Duquesne (12/12/09) at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The 18 points tied a career high.
In the second half against the Dukes, Abraham was the main offensive catalyst during an 18-4 run that turned a nine-point deficit for Robert Morris into a five-point lead with 10:09 to play. He connected on three straight from long range with RMU trailing, 34-25, that helped trim the deficit for the Colonials to two, 36-34. Robert Morris would take a 43-38 lead later in the contest.
The six three-pointers for Abraham against Duquesne tied an RMU single-game freshman record, tying the mark originally established by former guard Bubba Donnelly (1991-95). Donnelly finished 6-for-11 from long range in a 93-61 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) (2/15/94) at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
Despite averaging just 18.4 minutes per game and not owning a career start, Abraham leads the Colonials in scoring with a 9.6 points per game average. He leads the Northeast Conference in free-throw shooting percentage (.889) while ranking second in three-point field goal percentage (.459) and eighth in three-point field goals made per game (2.13).
Led by third-year head coach Mike Rice, Robert Morris is next in action Tuesday, Dec. 15, when it travels to Cleveland, Ohio, for a 7:00 p.m. tip against Cleveland State at Henry J. Goodman Arena.
