Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Robert Morris University softball team concluded the road portion of its 2010 slate as the Colonials visited cross-town rival, Pittsburgh, for a two game series. In a pitchers duel, RMU found three late runs to defeat the Panthers, 3-2 in game one. In game two, Pitt fired back with seven runs to drop the Colonials, 7-1.
For the first five innings of play, both teams held the other scoreless as Alexa Bryson (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) kept the Panthers to just four hits in the opening five frames.
Finally in the top of the sixth, the Colonials jumped out to a two run lead with a three-hit inning. Kayla Crooks (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear) and Jaci Timko (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) led off the inning with back-to-back singles and eventually scored on a hit to right field by Sarah Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour).
The Panthers responded with their own two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Robert Morris notched the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. With her third hit of the contest, Crooks drove in the winning run to score pinch-runner, Jessica Tanigawa (Marysville, WA / Marysville-Pitchuck).
Bryson allowed two earned runs, nine hits and struck out two in her 19th win.
In the night cap, the Colonials recorded their lone run in the top of the first inning when Annie Dubovec (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) singled up the middle to allow Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, Del / St. Marks) to touch home.
The score remained 1-0 RMU until the bottom of the fourth when Pitt exploded with a five-hit, six-run inning. The Panthers tacked on another run in the seventh to defeat Robert Morris, 7-1.
Dubovec pitched the entire contest and was charged with all seven of the Panther runs.
The Colonials (27-18 ; 13-6 NEC) close out the 2010 regular season on Sunday when Lafayette visits for a doubleheader at noon. Also, Robert Morris will honor senior Megan Picinic (Cliffside, NJ / Immaculate Heart) in her final RMU home game.
