Oxford, Ohio / Millett Hall? The Robert Morris University women's basketball team dropped their third straight game, 82-74, at Miami University Wednesday night. The Colonials fall to 2-5 on the season and just 1-4 on the road while the RedHawks watch their record improve to 5-4, all five wins coming at Millett Hall on the Oxford, Ohio, campus.
“You have to play harder defense to beat a strong Mid-American Conference team like Miami,” said Robert Morris head coach Sal Buscaglia. “We didn't have the performances we needed tonight to win, especially when you're playing on the road. I was hoping our schedule would make us tougher, but it seems to be having a negative, tiring effect on us.”
Colonials' junior guard Sade Logan (Knoxville, Tenn. / Chattanooga State) eclipsed the 30-point plateau for the third time this season, finishing one short of the Robert Morris single-game record with eight three pointers and setting a record with 30 field goal attempts. Logan finished with 33 points on 12-30 shooting, including 8-13 from beyond the arc.
Senior guard Psyche Butler (Fort Worth, Texas / New Mexico JC) finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Junior guard Angela Pace (Westchester, N.Y. / Monroe JC) was 6-7 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe to finish with 14 points. Senior forward Chinata Nesbit (Washington, D.C. / Chipola JC) narrowly missed her third double-double of the 2007-08 campaign with a game-high 10 rebounds along with nine points.
The Colonials got off to a slow start as Miami scored the first five points of the game taking an 8-2 lead after Nesbit made a pair of free throws at 16:54 ? the Colonials first points of the game. RMU went on an 8-2 run of their own to tie the game at 10-10 when Butler hit a jumper with 12:28 left in the half.
The RedHawks then went on a 13-0 run, hitting back-to-back three-pointers then converting on an old-fashioned three-point play. By the time Pace made a lay-up with 8:04 left, the Colonials were trailing 23-12 after going 4:24 without a point.
Logan scored the next nine points for RMU but Miami matched Robert Morris and held onto a 32-21 lead with 3:26 remaining. The Colonials cut the lead to seven in part to six points from Pace and a three-pointer by Logan sending the game into the break with the RedHawks leading 37-30.
The Colonials opened the second half on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 41-40 with 13:15 remaining in regulation. Nesbit and Kendra Williams (Bronx, N.Y. / Mount Saint Ursula) each had four points and Logan had a three-pointer during the spurt.
Miami held the lead for much of the second half, before RMU took their first lead of the game, 60-58, on a Logan three-pointer with 6:50 left in regulation. That came in the middle of a 13-3 Robert Morris run featuring two Logan three pointers and two Butler lay-ups that gave the Colonials a 67-61 lead with 5:12 left. The RedHawks hit three-pointers on the next two possessions to tie the game before another Logan trifecta put the Colonials back up three. The next seven points went to the home team, however, as Miami won going away, 82-74.
The RedHawks had three players in double figures led by Amanda Jackson's 22 points. Jenna Schone had 19 points, including three three-pointers, and Courtney Reed chipped in with 15.
Robert Morris shot 38.7% (29-75) in the game while Miami converted on 44.6% (29-65) of their shots. RMU was 8-14 (57.1%) from three-point range as the RedHawks were 8-20 (40.0%).
Robert Morris returns home for the first time since November 15 when they host Saint Francis (Pa.) this Saturda, December 8, at 4:30 p.m.
