Pittsburgh, Pa. ? After concluding day one of the 2008 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in sixth place, the Robert Morris University women's track and field team will look to gain ground on meet-leader Saint Francis (Pa.) as they take to the field for day two's action on Sunday at the RMU Island Sports Center.
The Colonials collected 16.50 points on six events scored while the Red Flash dominated the throwing events to accumulate 63 points and lock up first place.
Sophomore Melitta Brown (York, Ontario / Sacred Heart) claimed gold in the women's long jump, beating out Monmouth's Ashley Huffman with a leap of 5.75m. The second-year jumper also qualified for NCAA East Regional Championships by virtue of winning the event.
Seniors Jordhanna White (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson), Brittany DeMudd (Warrensville Heights, Ohio / St. Peter Chanel) and Corina Campbell (Smithburg, Md. / Smithburg) look to join Brown as medalists in Sunday's finals after qualifying in the 100-meter hurdles. White posted an event-best time of 14.79 while DeMudd finished in at 15.23 and Campbell at 15.31.
Senior Nicole Carter (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler), sophomore Emily Ingle (Tyrone, Pa. / Tyrone) and freshman Samantha Simile (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) are also in contention for some hardware in day two's competition after finishing in the top percentile of the 1,500-meter run and the 400-meter hurdles. Ingle and Carter crossed the tape in the 1,500-meter run with marks of 5:03.43 and 5:04.54. Simile made the cut in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.25.
