Initial Eligibility Tips for Success
GET OUT IN FRONT EARLY
- Perform an initial eligibility evaluation with the prospect’s transcript and the 48H form for their specific school.
- Encourage all prospects to register with the Eligibility Center and initiate the certification process immediately after they receive their final junior grades.
- Include NCAA Eligibility Center information in multiple recruiting letters to each prospect.
- Discuss the Eligibility Center during Official and Unofficial Visits.
- Remind all recruits to use the four-digit Eligibility Center code (9999) whenever taking the SAT or ACT.
- Make sure to provide names and birth dates to the Compliance to ensure
that an Institutional Request List (IRL) is completed for all
prospects who may attend RMU.
PREPARE FOR THE DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE PROCESS
Inform the Compliance Office of any prospects with special circumstances, such as:
- Multiple high school attendance;
- International high school attendance;
- Learning disability;
- Home schooling
In cases of multiple high school attendance, all grades must be reflected on official transcripts.
In cases of international high school attendance, the Eligibility Center must receive not only the official transcript in the original language, but also the English translation.
DON’T FORGET AMATEURISM
Failure to receive amateurism certification creates every bit of problem that failure to receive academic certification does.
Make sure to remind them the process requires two steps: (1) completing the amateurism survey and (2) logging in a second time after April 1st to sign their 10.1 statement.
Encourage prospects to complete this process as soon as possible, as delays in the certification process can (and often do) occur in the mid- to late- summer periods.
FINISH STRONG
Check your team’s IRL on the Eligibility Center website consistently! The status of all prospects whose information has been submitted to the Eligibility Center via IRL will appear on these reports.
Don't relax when you see a "Prelim = Y" on the Status Report. There is a huge difference between PRELIMINARY and FINAL.
Follow-up with the prospect and his/her high school whenever the Status Report indicates that information is missing (e.g., transcript, test score, etc.).
REMEMBER - THE RACE DOESN'T END UNTIL THE ENTIRE TEAM IS CLEARED
Immediately inform all walk-ons about the Eligibility Center process. A student-athlete who joins the team without final Eligibility Center certification may practice for a period of 14 days (if recruited) or 45 (if not recruited) days from his/her first day of practice. He/she may not compete until final certification as a Qualifier has been obtained. If this final certification has not been obtained by the end of the 14-day or 45-day period, he/she must cease all athletically-related activities.
