Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center-The Robert Morris University women's basketball team doubled-up on St. Francis (N.Y.), 72-36, Saturday afternoon at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Colonials are now 14-7 overall and improve to 9-1 in conference play, tying the best-ever league start in program history set by the 2005-06 squad. The Terriers slip to 1-20 and continue to look for their first league win, sitting at 0-10 on the year.
Robert Morris set a new program record for points allowed in a half, holding the Terriers to just 13 second-half points on 5-of-23 shooting. RMU also saw 15 career highs set or tied by six different players.
Freshman forward Anna Gailite (Riga, Latvia / Latvian National U-20) set career highs in points (15), rebounds (7), field goals (7) and minutes played (27) to take Saturday's spotlight.
Freshman Vega Gimeno-Martinez (Valencia, Spain / Spanish National U-20) topped all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including a 3-of-6 performance from three-point range. Senior Angela Pace (Westchester, N.Y. / Woodlands (Monroe College)) tacked on 13 points and eight rebounds, finishing perfect from the field, 5-for-5, and the charity stripe, 3-for-3.
RMU broke open the game with a 21-0 run over a 6:00 minute span in the first half. They went 8-of-12 during the run that ended with the Colonials holding a 34-10 lead with 9:00 to play in the first half. Led by 11 points from Pace and Gailite, the host squad held a 45-23 lead at the break on 55.9 percent (19-34) shooting and a 26-10 rebounding advantage.
The Colonials built the lead to as many as 38 points in the second half by holding the Terriers scoreless for 11:58. RMU went on an 18-0 run during that time to go up 70-32 on a Jasmine Tate (Columbus, Ohio / Harvest Prep) free throw with 2:10 left to play.
Shannon Gantt was the only Terrier player in double-digits, finishing the contest with 12 points. Amber Lau added seven rebounds to top the squad.
RMU held a 50-28 advantage on the glass while shooting 45.9 percent (28-61). They held St. Francis to just 26.9 percent (14-52) shooting.
The Colonials return to the hardwood on Thursday, February 4, when they travel to Saint Francis (Pa.) for a 5:00 p.m. contest against the Red Flash.
