Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's tennis team opened its 2010 spring campaign with a trio of matches over the weekend, falling to Wright State, 6-1, at home, Jan. 30, before traveling to Cleveland, Ohio, and dropping an 8-1 decision to Case Western in a neutral site match before suffering a 7-0 loss to Cleveland State, Jan. 31.
The Colonials slip to 3-5 overall in dual match action on the 2009-10 campaign.
Against the Raiders in the first match of the weekend, the lone point for RMU came courtesy of freshman Grigory Sovko (Moscow, Russia / Moscow), who earned a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win over Evan Neuman at the No. 6 double flight.
The next afternoon, sophomore Igor Neves (Ponta Pora, Brazil / Ponta Pora) claimed the lone point for the Colonials against Case Western with a victory at No. 2 singles, earning a 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 win over Kyle Gerber.
In the final match of the weekend against Cleveland State, despite not earning a win in singles play junior Daniel Becker (Carnegie, Pa. / Carlynton) teamed up with freshman Liran Braun (Herzelia, Israel / Herzelia) to earn an 8-6 win over Jay Jones and Aris Spirtos of the Vikings at the No. 3 singles flight.
Robert Morris continues its 2010 spring season with a pair of matches Saturday, Feb. 6, by taking on both Carnegie Mellon and IPFW.
