Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's golf team, under the direction of ninth-year head coach Jerry Stone, was selected to finish seventh according to the 2010 Northeast Conference Women's Golf Preseason Coaches' Poll. Fairleigh Dickinson was the runaway favorite, garnering eight of a possible nine first-place votes (teams do note vote on themselves) in the 10 team league.
Sacred Heart was selected second followed by Long Island, Saint Francis (Pa.), Mount St. Mary's, Central Connecticut State, Robert Morris, Monmouth, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Wagner.
The Colonials have a blend of young and experienced players, topped by senior Ashleigh Frieday (Grand Island, N.Y. / Grand Island). Frieday shot the lowest round in team history at the Ball State Cardinal Classic in the fall, carding a one-over par 73. She leads the squad with a 83.5 stroke average.
Sophomores Cassie Stein (Lewiston, N.Y. / Nichols School) and Elizabeth Wenger (Toledo, Ohio / Whitmer) and freshman Tess Wolfe (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Blackhawk) give the future of the RMU program a positive outlook. Stein has the team's top finish this season taking fifth at the Knights Golf Invitational to end the fall season. Her scoring average of 85.1 is second on the squad. Wolfe averages an 86.9 and Wenger an 87.3. Wolfe, the rookie, took ninth at the Knights Golf Invitational posting an 85 in the rain-shortened event.
Seniors Sarah Davis (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) and Jacqueline Jurinko (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) add depth to the squad while freshman Jenna Rinker (Slippery Rock, Pa. / Slippery Rock (Clarion)) transferred from Clarion University and will bring more competition to the lineup.
