CAMP EMPLOYMENT for RMU-Owned and -Operated Camps
Camp employees must be paid based on guidelines established by the camp director prior to the start of camp. These guidelines must be in writing on the Employment Wage Scale form, and will be reviewed as part of the Request for Approval Form checklist.
Basic information regarding specific employees, responsibilities, titles and payment must also be recorded for each employee and submitted on the Employment Roster form within 30 days of the camp’s completion. Failure to complete this step in the process may jeopardize future opportunities to host camps on RMU’s campus.
High-School, Prep-School, or Two-Year-College Coaches
May be employed by RMU staff members at their camps/clinics, provided:
- The coach receives compensation that is commensurate with the going rate for camp counselors of like teaching ability and camp experience; and,
- The coach is not paid on the basis of the value the coach may have for the employer because of the coach's reputation or contact with prospects.
A high-school, prep-school, or two-year-college coach may not be compensated or reimbursed based on the number of campers the coach sends to the camp.
Student-Athletes
For camps/clinics in sports other than football, an institution (or a staff member of its athletics department) may employ student-athletes to work as counselors, subject to the following conditions:
- Involved student-athletes may not participate in any activities that constitute "organized practice activities" per NCAA regulations;
- There are no limits on the number of student-athletes in a particular sport who may be employed.
No member of the football team with eligibility remaining may be employed or otherwise participate in that institution's football camp. A member of the football team with eligibility remaining may be employed in a diversified camp conducted by the student-athlete's own institution, provided not more than one team member is employed.
Compensation for work performed is permissible provided:
- The student-athlete must perform duties that are of a general supervisory character in addition to any coaching or officiating assignments.
- Compensation is commensurate with the going rate for counselors of like teaching ability and experience, and may not be paid on the basis of the value that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of his/her athletics reputation.
- A student-athlete is not compensated for only lectures or demonstrations.
A student-athlete may receive actual travel expenses (lodging/meals in transit, prepaid plane tickets, cash advances) only if such travel expenses are paid and procedures for reimbursement are used for all employees of the camp/clinic.
Actual transportation from an institution's coach or representative of its athletics interests (booster) may be provided only if travel expenses are paid for all employees.
