Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University head men's ice hockey coach Derek Schooley announced Tuesday that the Colonials' five seniors will serve as captains for the 2010-11 season.
Chris Kushneriuk (Ottawa, Ontario / Orleans Blues) serves as captain with Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) and Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) working as assistant captains at home, while Scott Kobialko (Spruce Grove, Alberta / Camrose Kodiaks) and Brock Meadows (White Rock, B.C. / Salmon Arm Silverbacks) will work as assistant captains on the road.
"I am very proud to announce these men as the leaders of this year's team," Schooley said. "We feel we have very good leadership from our upperclassmen with a strong core of seniors and juniors. We are very excited for the start of our first season in Atlantic Hockey."
Kushneriuk will wear the "C" on his sweater for the 2010-11 season. The senior holds 48 career points as a Colonial netting 20 goals and passing out 28 assists since transferring from Wayne State. Last season, Kushneriuk, a native of Ottawa, Ontario, ranked second on the team in points with 29, scoring 11 goals and dishing out 18 assists. He racked up four special teams goals, two on the power play and two shorthanded. Kushneriuk scored his first career hat trick Nov. 13 and became just the seventh player in school history to record a hat trick. The business administration major found the net shorthanded against then-No. 1 ranked Miami in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase Jan. 8.
Kobialko found the net 10 times during the 2009-10 season to rank third on the team in goals. The Spruce Grove, Alberta native holds 35 career points with 19 goals and 16 assists. The management major scored the game-tying goal against Alabama-Huntsville Dec. 4 on the power-play. He also recorded three multi-point games in 2009-10.
Longpre enters his second season as an assistant captain after leading the Colonials in points with 31 in 2009-10. The Peterborough, Ontario native tied for sixth in College Hockey America in scoring (14-17-31) and finished the season tied for third in goals scored in the CHA with 14. Longpre's 14-goal season ranks fifth in Robert Morris single season history and the third most by a player in his junior campaign. The sport management major set the Robert Morris single-game record for goals in a game against Quinnipiac Oct. 31, finding the net four times, and tied the school single-game record for points in a game with five in the same game.
Meadows ranks as one of Robert Morris' top defensive defensemen and appeared in 34 games for the Colonials a season ago while posting, a +3 plus/minus rating. The native of White Rock, British Columbia, picked up 16 penalties and 32 penalty minutes.
Urban returns as one of the top offensive defenseman in the country with 72 career points to his credit. The native of Pittsburgh, Pa., ranks as Robert Morris' all-time leading defenseman scorer. The accounting major also became the Colonials leading goals scorer among defenseman a season ago with a Jan. 15 second period tally against Alabama-Huntsville. Urban found the net 10 timesa season ago to set a school record for goals in a single season by a defenseman. He led the team in game-winning goals as a junior with three, including the decisive tally against then-No. 1 Miami Jan. 10.
Robert Morris opens the season with an exhibition against Queens at 7:00 p.m., Oct. 2, at the Island Sports Center. The regular season opener for the Coloinals is slated for Oct. 9 at American International. Robert Morris opens its home regular season schedule at 6:05 p.m., Oct. 17, in the RMU Hockey Showcase against Air Force at the CONSOL Energy Center.
