Colonial Pro Hockey Round Up

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey program saw 19 of its former student-athletes play professionally this past season in different leagues around the United States and Internationally.  

Sean Berkstresser - A Colonials from 2004-08, recorded 77 points in his Colonial career, saw action in 55 regular season games this past season with the Greenville Road Warriors. The Apollo, Pa. native scored eight goals and passed out eight assists in the regular season and added two goals and two more assists in the ECHL playoffs. Berkstresser helped the Warriors to the second round of the ECHL playoffs where they fell to the Wheeling Nailers in seven games.

Andrew Bonello - Played for the Colonials from 2004-08 finished his second season playing professionally in France with Lyon. In 18 regular season games he scored five goals and handed out 16 assists and went on to play eight more games in the playoffs with Lyon netting four goals and handing out eight assists.

Christian Boucher - Played for Robert Morris from 2004-08 and still holds the school record for wins by a Colonial netminder. Boucher helped Nijmegen Devils to the Dutch Championship a season ago and in 2010-11 played in 61 games with the Hull Stingrays posting a 3.68 goal-against average and a .895 save percentage.

Aaron Clarke - Two year player at Robert Morris from 2005-07 saw action in 67 ECHL games this past season starting the season with the Stockton Thunder were is played 24 games and picked up four goals and 10 assists before moving over to the Kalamazoo Wings where he played in 43 games scoring 17 goals and passing out 16 assists during the regular season. In the playoffs he has seen action in 13 games while netting four goals and dishing out eight assists helping the Wings to the Kelly Cup Finals.

Dave Cowan - Finished off the 2009-10 season with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL and then earned a trip to the Toronto Maple Leafs Prospects Camp where he suffered an injury that knocked him out of action for the rest of the 2010-11 season.

Rob Cowan - Served as the first team captain of the Colonials playing from 2004-08 and saw action in 123 games at RMU. This past season he played in 66 games at Robert Morris with a goal and three assists from his spot in the defensive pairings. Cowan helped Rio Grande to the playoff where they fell to the top seed Allen in the opening round.

 Ryan Cruthers - Played for Robert Morris from 2006-08 and recorded 86 points in just two seasons in Pittsburgh. Cruthers spent a majority of the 2010-11 season in the AHL playing 15 games with three different teams (The Lake Erie Monsters, the Manitoba Moose and the Hershey Bears). Curthers played eight postseason games with the Reading Royals of the ECHL scoring five goals and handing out three assists helping Reading to the second round of the ECHL playoffs where they fell in four games to Aaron Clarke and the Kalamazoo Wings.

Karac Davis - Davis played with Robert Morris during the 2006-07 season and played the 2010-11 season with the 1000 Islands Privateers of the FHL. Davis saw action in three games all in net allowing just six goals. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native posted a 1-1-0 record, a 2.76 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.

Reid Edmondson - A Colonial for the 2009-10 season saw action in 53 games for the Laredo Bucks this past season in the CHL and he netted 10 goals and dished out 5 assists.

Kyle Frieday - Played a two seasons with Robert Morris from 2006-08. He spent last season with the Broome County / Cape Cod Barons of the FHL. The Burlington, Ontario native saw action in 21 games scoring three goals and handing out six assists for the Barons.  

Joel Gasper - Gasper played with Colonials from 2004-08 and spent the 2010-11 season with the Quad City Mallards of the CHL. Gasper played in 62 games scoring nine goals and handing out 15 assists during the regular season. During the post season with the Mallards Gasper netted two goals and handed out two assists in four games.

Matt Krug - A Colonial during the 2008-09 season played the past season with four different teams in ECHL, AHL and CHL. Krug started the season with the Gwinnett Gladiators playing 39 games with three goals and four assist before being moved to the Elmira Jackals. Krug got was called up to the AHL for one game with the Chicago Wolves and also saw action with the Fort Wayne Komets of the CHL playing three regular season game and eight contest in the post season. Krug scored a goal and handed out an assist in the post season for the Komets.

Chris Kushneriuk - Signed with the Wheeling Nailers after serving as the Colonials captain during the 2010-11 season. The Ottawa, Ontario native played in eight regular season games and scored four goals and passed out three assists. Kushneriuk then played in 14 playoff games for the Nailers and netted three goals and dished out five assists helping Wheeling to the Eastern Conference finals in the ECHL where the Nailers fell to the Kalamazoo Wings. 

Nathan Longpre - Became just the second Colonial to go straight from college to the AHL after he signed with the Worcester Sharks. Longpre played in eight games and earned one assists for the Sharks.

Brock Meadows - Played in a pair of ECHL games after complete the 2010-11 season with Robert Morris. The White Rock, British Columbia native played a game with the Reading Royals and a game with the Wheeling Nailers.

Jared Mycyk - The Colonials equipment manager for six seasons spent last season in the pros with the Mississippi River Kings of the CHL. Mycyk helped the River Kings to a 30-31-5 record and a sixth place finish in the CHL's Berry division.

Jake Obermeyer - A Colonial from 2006-09 spent his 2010-11 season between two teams in the CHL. Obermeyer started the season in Rio Grande and played 37 games there, picking up four goals and 12 assists before being moved to the Evansville IceMen where he saw action in 28 games and passed out eight assists.

Denny Urban - After completing the 2010-11 season with the Colonials Urban signed with the Reading Royals of the ECHL and helped them to the conference semifinal. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native played in 14 regular season games and six in the playoffs. He recorded nine points with three goals and six assists.

Rick Varone - A member of the Colonials first division I hockey team back during the 2004-05 season played in one game this season with the Bloomington Prairie Thunder. The native of Woodbridge, Ontario picked up a goal in that game.

J.C. Velasquez - Played with Robert Morris from 2006-2010 and spent his first professional season with the Danbury Whalers of the FHL. The Clarksen, Mich. native saw action in 22 games and recorded eight goals and handed out 17 assists.
