In doing so, Matisz became the first Colonial in school history to compete in the MLL although numerous other RMU men's lacrosse alums have taken the field in the National Lacrosse League (NLL), including two that earned either All-Pro or All-Star status.

Matisz was selected in the 2012 Collegiate Draft by Hamilton and appeared in three games with the Nationals early in the season. He was then picked up by the Machine, and his scoring soon took off.

Matisz notched a pair of goals in his initial appearance with Ohio in a June 23 contest against Charlotte. He followed that performance up with his first-career MLL hat trick as he tallied a trio of scores at Denver in fewer than 15 minutes. In his final contest in July, Matisz put home two goals at Rochester (see links to view video of Matisz's goals).

Matisz's scoring should come as no surprise to RMU fans as his individual offensive performances, combined with his exploits in the classroom, helped earn him an array of accolades. He was named as a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-American, the Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Year, a Capital One Academic All-District First Team member, a three-time All-NEC First Team honoree and became the first student-athlete from any RMU sport to be named as a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award finalist. He holds the school's single-season record for points (64) and ranks second in both career points (166) and career assists (72) and fourth in career goals (94).

His presence in a Colonial uniform was a key reason why Robert Morris became the first Division I team to lead the nation in scoring offense in three consecutive seasons since the NCAA started keeping track of such records. RMU has scored 652 goals over its last three seasons, averaging 14.49 goals per outing. Additionally, the Colonials have topped the country in assists per game in each of the past three years, including posting a program-best 9.80 helpers per game in 2012.

While Matisz is in his first season in the professional ranks of lacrosse, a quintet of Colonials competed in the NLL earlier this year. Jeff Gilbert was one of just three defensemen in the entire league to earn All-Pro honors while Andrew Watt, a 2011 All Star, posted 11 points including eight goals, along with 61 loose balls while competing in every game as a transition player. Corbyn Tao-Brambleby notched 43 points (21g, 22a) and 67 loose balls on the year while fellow rookie Patrick Smith made his impact by scoring a pair of goals in his lone appearance. Jordon Sealock, a defenseman, played in 13 games and collected 18 loose balls, three forced turnovers along with grabbing two points.

The RMU men's lacrosse team registered a program-record 11 wins in 2012, including running through NEC play undefeated to claim the league's regular-season title and extend their conference winning streak to eight games. The Colonials knocked off a pair of nationally-ranked squads during the campaign, including a 9-7 road victory at Ohio State, and also entered the Nike/Inside Lacrosse national rankings after a six-game winning streak.
