Moon
Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team had a member
of its 2012-2013 freshman class honored by the Atlantic Hockey Association for
their performance this past week. Goaltender Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire
Jr. Monarchs) was named the Travel Team USA Rookie of the Week after
backstopping the Colonials to a 4-0 shutout of conference foe Canisius on this
past Friday.
Shafer
turned in a 24-save shutout of the Golden Griffins in only the second start of
his career. The victory for the Colonials would also be Shafer's first
collegiate win. The freshman would help Robert Morris gain its footing in the first
period as he steered aside the seven first period shots by the Golden Griffins.
The goaltender remained poised while his team was on the penalty kill as for
the first time in AHA play this season, the Colonials would not allow a
power-play goal.
The
shutout was the second of the season for the Colonials which ties a
single-season for the program. The win
for Robert Morris would be the team's first victory on the road against
Canisius since October 7, 2006.
Robert
Morris will return to action this Saturday as they travel to Niagara for their second
game of a five-game road trip. Faceoff
is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
