Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's track & field team completed action in the 2013 Northeast Conference Championships Sunday in West Long Branch, N.J., by finishing third with a point total of 122.
Host Monmouth claimed its fifth straight NEC title by compiling 173 points, while LIU Brooklyn finished second with a point tally of 131.
Trailing the Colonials were Central Connecticut State (91), Sacred Heart (70), Wagner (60), Mount St. Mary's (48), St. Francis (N.Y.) (35), Saint Francis (Pa.) (35), Fairleigh Dickinson (35) and Bryant (19).
Joining junior Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) as an individual champion from RMU Sunday was senior Brendan Morales (Westminster, Md. / Westminster), who claimed gold in the hammer throw thanks to a toss of 55.79 meters (183'00"). The tally marked a season high in the event for Morales and also allowed him to earn All-NEC First Team honors.
Also earning All-NEC accolades in the throws Sunday for Robert Morris was senior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic), who finished second in the shot put with a throw of 17.43 meters (57'2.25") to earn second team honors and establish and shatter his own school record in the event.
RMU featured three of the top five marks in the shot put, as senior Collin Ray (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) earned bronze with a throw of 17.17 meters (56'4"), while Morales placed fifth at 16.29 meters (53'5.50").
Mitchell also finished third in the hammer throw thanks to a final tally of 53.81 meters (176'6").
Junior Dorian Rumble (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills) also earned All-NEC honors in the 800-meter run, placing second with a time of 1:54.24 to earn second team accolades.
In other field events for the Colonials, sophomore Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) placed third in the triple jump thanks to a leap of 14.29 meters (46'10.75"), while senior Lance Washington (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg) placed fourth at 14.24 meters (46'8.75").
A pair of RMU relay squads also earned third place Sunday afternoon.
The RMU 4x400-meter relay squad consisted of Carper, junior Freddie Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills), freshman Mark Ayitey (East Pittsburgh, Pa. / Woodland Hills) and junior Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) and crossed the finish line with a time of 3:17.37 to qualify for the IC4A/ECAC Championships, while the 4x100-meter relay that featured junior Jermaine Dwight (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham Township), sophomore Malcolm Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg), junior Abraham Roy (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) and freshman Logan Haines-Douglas (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area) clocked in with a time of 41.59 seconds to also qualify for the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
The NEC Championships now complete, Robert Morris returns to action with the IC4A/ECAC Championships, which take place May 10-12 in Princeton, N.J.
