ChampionsGate, Fla. / ChampionsGate G.C. -- The Robert Morris University men's golf team posted its best result since 2005, finishing fourth at the 11-team Northeast Conference Men's Golf Championships over the weekend. Sophomore C.G. Mercatoris (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville) earned all-tournament honors by finishing sixth overall.
Sacred Heart won the team championship with a 883 three-round total, besting second-place finisher Central Connecticut State by 26 strokes. The Blue Devils Eric Hawerchak won medalist honors by shooting 212, four-strokes under par. Long Island was third at 910 followed by Robert Morris (915), Saint Francis (Pa.) (916), Fairleigh Dickinson (918), Momouth and Mount St. Mary's (920), Quinnipiac (945), Wagner (1,001) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (1,032).
Mercatoris find himself in a tie for first after firing an opening round, four-under 68. The sophomore finished with a 73 and a 77, taming the 6,937-yard, par 72 layout with a 218 total. Junior Joe Kabana (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Notre Dame) tied for 21st overall. He finished with a 232 total, recovering from an opening round 81 to shoot 74 and 77 in the final two days.
Senior Adam Farry (Fairfax, Va. / James W. Robinson) tied for 28th with rounds of 78-76-81 and a 235 total. Sophomore Michael Walters (Vero Beach, Fa. / John Carroll) was one stroke back at 236, posting rounds of 79-81-76 to tie of 30th. Senior Joe Horvat (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) rounded out the Colonials players, finishing in a tie for 47th after a final round 75. Horvat shot 85 and 83 in the first two rounds.
