Olean, N.Y. / Bartlett Country Club - In its
first competition of the fall season, the Robert Morris University men's golf
team finds itself in second place after 18 holes at the 24th Annual
Leo Keenan Invitational hosted by St. Bonaventure University.
The Colonials sit seven strokes behind the host Bonnies who
fired an opening round 292. RMU sits at 299 followed by La Salle in third with
a 301. LIU Brooklyn is fourth at 305 followed by Humber and Drexel (306),
Niagara (315) and Ottawa (317).
Robert Morris led the field with two eagles and 13 birdies,
but were sixth among all teams with 38 pars.
Freshman Garrett Browning (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny) is
tops among the RMU contingent after an opening round 73 on the par-70,
6,308-yard layout at Bartlett Country Club in Olean, N.Y. An eagle on the
500-yard par-five 14th highlighted the rookie's round that puts him
fifth in the field.
Senior Brock Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) and
sophomore Ryan Prokay (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) posted rounds of 75 and
find themselves tied for 12th. Pompeani also eagled the 14th
hole en route to his round of five-over. Prokay managed four birdies which ties
him for most among the 45 players who started the event.
Senior Brandon Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) and
freshman Dan Maier (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) were on stroke back as both
carded rounds of 76. Pompeani shot 39-37
while Maier carded three birdies during his round.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Matt Gurska
(Hermitage, Pa. / Kennedy Catholic) came home in 80 strokes during a round that
featured par on 10 holes.
The event's final 18 holes are slated for Monday, Sept. 17.
