|Late Run Lifts RMU Over Bowling Green, 71-60|
Moon Township, Pa. - Trailing, 49-44, with 9:59 to play, the Robert Morris University men's basketball team reeled off a 12-0 run to take a 56-49 lead en route to a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green Monday night as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off Consolation Round at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
The Colonials improved to 2-3 overall on the 2012-13 season with the win, while the Falcons slipped to 1-3.
Craig Sealey had given BGSU a 49-44 advantage after a traditional three-point play, but junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate (Washington, D.C. / Charis Prep) ignited the decisive surge with a layup with 9:28 to go. Myers-Pate was also fouled on the play, and he converted the three-point play with a successful free-throw attempt to help pull RMU within 49-47.
Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones (Philadelphia, Pa. / Northeast Catholic) would push Robert Morris back on top, 50-49, with a three-pointer, and six straight points from junior guard Karvel Anderson (Elkhart, Ind. / Glen Oaks Community College), including a three-point play and three-pointer, helped the Colonials take a 56-49 advantage.
Four straight points by A'uston Calhoun helped Bowling Green close to within 56-53 at the 6:48 mark of the second half, but RMU was able to keep the Falcons at bay. A three-pointer from sophomore forward Lucky Jones (Newark, N.J. / St. Anthony) and four straight free throws by Velton Jones gave the Colonials a 63-55 edge with 4:17 to play.
BGSU didn't threaten after that, closing to within 66-60 after a three-pointer by Calhoun with 59 seconds left, but Robert Morris sealed the win at the free-throw line.
The Colonials jumped out to leads of 9-6 and 14-10 in the opening minutes of action, but the Falcons used a 14-1 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 24-15, at the 7:48 mark of the first half. Bowling Green used the long ball during the surge, as James Erger and Jehvon Clarke each connected twice from beyond the arc.
Calhoun would give BGSU a 26-17 lead with 6:12 remaining in the first half with a layup off a feed from Jordon Crawford, but RMU closed the half on a 12-3 surge to knot the score at the break, 29-29.
Velton Jones started the run with a jumper and scored four points during the spurt, while junior forward Mike McFadden (Newark, N.J. / Technology) added four points, including a dunk.
For the second straight game the Colonials received a balanced attack offensively, as six players scored between eight and 16 points.
Myers-Pate and Anderson chipped in 11 and nine points, respectively, off the bench, while Lucky Jones compiled eight points and a game-high six rebounds.
Bowling Green was led by Calhoun, who finished with 17 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks. Crawford added 16 points, three assists and three steals for the Falcons.
