Moon Township, Pa. - Freshman forward Stephan Hawkins (Gary, Ind. / Bowman Academy) of the Robert Morris University men's basketball earned the first weekly honor of his career Monday, as he was tabbed the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. Hawkins garnered the honor after helping lead the Colonials to a 91-69 victory over Duquesne (12/15/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center in RMU's only game last week, tying a career high with six points on perfect 3-for-3 shooting while grabbing four rebounds. During a close first half, Hawkins kept Robert Morris within striking distance by netting four straight points, including a basket off an offensive rebound, that kept it a one-possession game before RMU reeled off a 7-2 run to close out the first half and take a 31-30 lead into the break. Hawkins capped off his perfect shooting performance with a bucket near the midway point of the second half that gave the Colonials a 67-47 advantage. On the 2012-13 season, Hawkins has appeared in 11 games, including one start, and has produced averages of 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in an average of 12.5 minutes per contest, shooting 55 percent (11-for-20) from the field and 85.7 percent (6-for-7) at the free-throw line. Led by third-year head coach Andrew Toole, Robert Morris looks for its fifth straight victory Tuesday, Dec. 18, with an 8:00 p.m. tip against Louisiana-Lafayette at the Cajundome in Lafayette, La. |
