Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex - The Robert Morris University men's soccer team saw its 2009 home schedule come to a close in the 109th minute against Bryant University. That's when the Bulldogs' Matthew Brown found the back of the net, handing the Colonials a 2-1 double overtime loss in RMU's home finale at North Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon.
Bryant (5-12-1, 3-6-1 Northeast Conference) tallied the gamewinner in the 109th minute when Sean Kaukas carried the ball to the RMU endline, left of the goal. He played a short cross back into the box where Brown was streaking toward net. His shot from eight yards out was true, giving the Bulldogs the win.
Bryant made the most of one its few first half opportunities when it was awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal near the sideline. Nicholas Parisi played an in-swinging ball to the center of the box where Neil Black outjumped everyone else. He directed his header back toward the near post, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
The Colonials (2-13-3, 2-4-3 NEC) knotted the contest in the 59th minute when junior Neil Shaffer (Aliquippa, Pa. / Beaver) was taken down in the Bulldogs box, giving RMU a penalty kick. Shaffer took the kick, shooting low and left to net his second marker of the season.
Robert Morris held a 22-16 advantage in shots, including 5-3 in overtime. RMU freshman goalkeeper Toba Bolaji (Vaughn, Ontario / Maple) finished with seven saves. The Bulldogs Victor Tutino stopped 12 shots.
The Colonials cap the regular season next Friday, November 6, when they travel to Saint Francis (Pa.) for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
