Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men’s hockey team returned to the ice at Clearview Arena on Saturday night for their second face off with the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville. The Colonials jumped out to a one goal lead, but UAH fought back with four goals of their own to beat RMU 4-2.
After a scoreless first period that featured five power play opportunities for the Colonials, RMU led Alabama-Huntsville 14-5 on shots.
Just over one minute into the second period, freshman Zach Hervato (Stittsville, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears) recorded the first of his career to give Robert Morris its first lead of the weekend. Sophomores Furman South (Sewickey, Pa. / Bay Sate Breakers) and James Lyle (Nepean, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears) earned helpers on the goal 1:46 into the second.
Down 1-0, the Charger offense finally got started at 6:57 of the second period when Sebasian Geoffrion netted his first career goal to tie the game at one all. With time running down in the period, Tom Train added a second tally to send UAH into the second intermission with the 2-1 advantage.
Problems continued to mount for RMU in the third as they allowed two more quick goals from a hungry Alabama-Huntsville team to extend the UAH lead to 4-1.
Facing a three goal deficit, South netted his second of the season with assists from Stefan Salituro (Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) and junior Brock Meadows (White Rock, B.C. / Wayne State) at 13:14 of the third.
Although the Colonials played with high level of intensity for the remainder of the contest, they could not manage to make up two more scores.
Overall, RMU out shot their opponent for the third consecutive contest as they concluded the night with shots, 41-17, in their favor. Robert Morris also had a disappointing night on the power play, only scoring one goal on ten chances.
Sophomore Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) allowed four goals and made 13 saves in his twelfth appearance of the 2009-10 season.
After closing out a three game homestand, the Colonials (3-10-2 ; 1-4-2 CHA) will take to the road as they face Niagara and Canisius before winter break. RMU and Niagara will match up next Friday, Dec. 11 at 7:05 p.m.a
