Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's tennis team continued its 2012-13 campaign this past weekend by taking part in the Raider Shootout on the campus of Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
The Colonials were led by senior Jose Limon (Colonia San Jose, Mexico) and freshman Juan Andres Hirmas (Padre Las Casas, Chile), who teamed up to finish as runner-up in the B doubles competition.
Limon and Hirmas opened bracket play with an 8-4 victory over Pablo Cabezon and Alex Portelance of Walsh University and advanced to the championship match of the bracket with an 8-2 win over Myles Harris and Evan Newman of the host Raiders.
In the championship match, Warren Race and Robert Skolik of Eastern Illinois posted an 8-4 victory over Limon and Hirmas. On the young 2012-13 campaign, Limon and Hirmas have combined for a 3-1 record in doubles play.
In singles action, sophomore Angus Thomson (Kedron, Australia) took part in the A singles bracket, posting a 1-2 record. Thomson suffered a 6-2, 6-1 setback to Pierce Kohls of Northern Kentucky before rebounding to earn an 8-2 win over Lauri Makikalli of Wright State in consolation action.
Thomson concluded play in the bracket with an 8-5 loss to Michael Sperry of Eastern Illinois.
Also earning victories in singles action as part of the Raider Shootout were Hirmas and senior Tarun Kishan (Mississauga, Ontario / Saint Francis Xavier Secondary).
Kishan took part in the B singles bracket, earning a 6-3, 0-6, 12-10 win over Gustavo Rueda of Northwestern Ohio before falling to Race, 6-4, 7-6.
Hirmas appeared in the C singles bracket, falling in his opening match before rebounding to post an 8-2 win over Carlos Jaque of Walsh.
RMU closes out its 2012 fall season Saturday, Oct. 6, with a pair of matches in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Colonials will take on Carnegie Mellon in a 9 a.m. match before battling Duquesne in a neutral site match at 2:00 p.m.
