|Colonials Return Home With Victory Over Hartwick|
Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex - The Robert Morris University men's soccer team returned home to North Athletic Complex for the first time since Aug. 26 and celebrated with a 2-1 victory over visiting Hartwick Saturday afternoon. The Colonials improve to 2-4-1 on the year while the Hawks fall to even on the season with a 2-2-2 mark.
RMU generated a pair of early opportunities, but a breakaway chance by Luca Campos (Monaca, Pa. / Center) was cleared from the line by a Hartwick defender after Campos had beaten the goalie. Junior Prince Samuels (Saint Catherine, Jamaica / Kingston College) put a shot on net later in the half, but this time Mateo Munarriz would react to the skipping volley, pushing it wide of the right post.
The Colonials finally capitalized on a chance in the 40th minute as Campos played a long ball into the left corner of Hartwick's defensive end. Junior Daniel Calabretta (Brampton, Ontario / St. Marguerite d'Youville) headed the ball back to the feet of classmate Miro Cabrilo (Hamilton, Ontario / Glendale Secondary) who then took two dribbles to the middle of the box. His hard right-footed shot was low and true, beating Munarriz to the near post.
A hustle play early in the second frame by senior Sam Colosimo (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) would put RMU up 2-0. A lazy pass back to Munarriz by the Hartwick defense was seized by Colosimo who touched past the Hawks keeper before netting his first goal into the vacated net.
Hartwick started to generate more opportunities as they switched to a 3-5-2 formation facing a two score deficit. The move paid off in the 73rd minute when Jhevaughn Beckford sent a hard low cross through the box to the far post where Chris Walter's sliding effort resulted in a goal for the Hawks.
RMU would hold off visiting Hartwick in the final 20 minutes. RMU senior keeper Toba Bolaji (Vaughan, Ontario / Maple) finished with five saves. Munarriz had three stops.
The Colonials go back on the road for their next four games beginning with a trip to the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh to take on the Pitt Panthers. That game is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
