Senior Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) collected the game's opening goal at 11:37 into the first for the Colonials. Sophomore Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) fired an initial shot that redirected behind the cage. Stoa was the first to control the puck and tried a wraparound attempt to beat the Ohio State goaltender, Lisa Steffes. Steffes got a piece of the shot, but it wasn't enough as the puck popped up into the air behind her and found its way across the goal line. It was Stoa's team-leading third goal of the season and was part of a 9-7 shot advantage for RMU in the first.
Natalie Spooner helped lead the Ohio State comeback in the second period by assisting on a game-tying goal at the 6:26 mark and scoring the go-ahead marker just under 11 minutes later. The Buckeyes proceeded to collect two goals in the final 18 seconds of the period to take a three-goal edge.
Ohio State's third score came after a series of Colonial shots, the final one of which was blocked and corralled by the Buckeyes who were able to successfully transition immediately from defense to offense. Ohio State gained control of the ensuing faceoff and quickly entered the RMU zone. The Buckeyes increased their advantage after a centering pass from the right side found Hokey Langan who one-timed it into the cage.
Neither team was able to score in the third as all 14 shots on net were saved, setting the final margin at three.
Robert Morris held Ohio State scoreless on the power play and limited the Buckeyes to just two shots on goal in such situations. Freshman Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) led the Colonials with a team season-high seven shots while senior Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) fired four on target for Robert Morris. Senior goalie Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) recorded a game-high 29 saves for RMU.The Colonials will look to get back on track next weekend as they conclude their season-opening six-game homestand with a pair of games against Northeastern, Saturday, Oct. 16, and Sunday, Oct. 17. Sunday's contest is part of the annual RMU Hockey Showcase, which will be played at CONSOL Energy Center, the brand new home of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
