|Colonials, Orange Spilt CHA Series|
Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse sophomore Nicole Ferrara scored with 1:15 left in regulation to break a 3-3 tie and help the Orange pick up their fourth College Hockey America (CHA) win of the season and to give the Robert Morris University women's hockey team its first conference loss.
Identically to last night's contest, Syracuse would score the first goal of the contest to have the Colonials tie the game in the second period. Senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe scored the first Orange goal after a pass from junior defenseman Brittney Krebs.
Just 3:45 into the second period, sophomore forward Maddie Collias (Roseville, Mich / Belle Tire) scored her second goal of the season to tie the game, 1-1. Junior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) notched the assist on the first RMU goal.
The lead would again go in favor of Syracuse at 13:29 of the second period when senior defenseman Jacquie Greco scored her third goal of the season to put the Orange up, 2-1. Goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater received the secondary assist on the score while sophomore defenseman Kaillie Goodnough received the primary assist.
Under four minutes later, senior forward Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) scored her first power play goal of the season to tie the game, 2-2. Junior forward Kristen Richards (Toronto, Ontario / Niagara University) and sophomore forward Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Jr. Thunder) registered the first and secondary assists on the power play goal. The goal is the seventh of the season for Thomas, ranking her second on the team in goals scored.
Just over the half-way mark of the third period, the lead would yet again change to favor the Orange. Scoring her second goal of the contest, Greco allowed Syracuse to go ahead, 3-2.
Less than two minutes later, the Colonials tied the game for the third time in the contest. Sophomore defenseman Erin Staniewski (Strathroy, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes) passed off to Vint who found classmate Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) who buried a shot to tally her first goal of the season. Vint's multi-point effort is her second in two games and fifth of the season.
For the fourth time of the afternoon, Syracuse regained the lead at 18:15 of the final frame, not leaving enough time for another Colonial comeback. Syracuse would defeat Robert Morris by a score of 4-3.
Senior netminder Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) earned the start between the pipes for RMU. DiCiocco registered a game-high 26 saves, 15 of which came in the third period.
Robert Morris now owns an overall record of 7-3-2 and a CHA record of 3-1-0. The Colonials now head back to Pittsburgh for an eight-game home-stretch. RMU will host CHA foe, No. 4 Mercyhurst next weekend at the RMU Island Sports Center. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. on Fri., December 7 and 3:05 p.m. on Sat., December 8.
