Mount St. Mary's at...
Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team notched three-consecutive goals in a 3:06 stretch of the fourth quarter to turn a 14-12 deficit into a 15-14 lead, but the Colonials were unable to hang on and dropped a 16-15 overtime decision to defending champion Mount St. Mary's in the opening Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament semifinal Friday evening at Joe Walton Stadium.

Despite the defeat, Colonial senior Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) had a memorable day as he tallied six points and broke the program's single-season points record. Matisz notched four goals and two assists to post 64 points for the year as he also became the fourth Colonial ever to tally 40 goals in a season. With his outing, Matisz moved into second place in all-time points at RMU (166) and into fourth in career goals with 94. Matisz claimed his 13th straight multi-point game Friday, and his 41st overall, as he extended his point streak to 21 games.

Senior Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) registered a quartet of helpers Friday to break RMU's single-season record for assists with 26. He notched his second straight game with at least four assists to extend his program-record total to 76 in that category. Buchanan also moved into the top five in career points with 128. Buchanan's 35th multi-point game extended his point streak to 19 contests.

RMU also broke a couple of team records on the evening as it topped its previous program bests for single-season assists and single-season ground balls, establishing new marks of 147 and 546, respectively.

RMU had advantages in a variety of statistical categories including shots, shots on goal, ground balls, clear percentage and saves. Robert Morris was perfect on clear attempts for the first time this season as it went 13-for-13. Friday's game marked the seventh straight outing in which RMU topped its opponent in shots, shots on goal and ground balls.

Mount St. Mary's struck first and held a slim, 3-2, edge after one quarter of play, but RMU rallied with six goals in the second quarter to take an 8-6 lead into the intermission. The Colonials were still up by one, 12-11, going into the final frame, but the Mountaineers soon took the lead.

Mount St. Mary's led 14-12 with under eight minutes to play in regulation, but a trio of Colonial goal scorers put the hosts up two with under five minutes to play. Mount St. Mary's would even the game, 15-15, with a little over two minutes left.

RMU then had a chance to pull ahead in the final seconds as it has possession of the ball, but it was not able to get a shot off. The Colonials had a point-blank look at the cage in the overtime session, but the Mountaineers' goaltender was up to the task, and Mount St. Mary's would soon successfully clear the ball and tally the winning goal.

Senior Casey Abbott (San Jose, Calif. / Bellarmine Prep.) had one of the best offensive performances of his career as he tied his career highs of four goals and five points that he set earlier this season. He also tallied four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers on the day.

Redshirt junior Dave Morton (Orangeville, Ontario / Hill School) posted three goals and an assist to notch four points on the day. His eighth straight multi-goal game allowed him to move into seventh in single-season points (49), tied for 10th in single-season goals and tied for sixth in single-season assists (19). Morton has now posted eight-career hat tricks, including one in each of the past four games, and extended his point streak to 14 games.

Junior Jake Hayes (Calgary, Alberta / Central Memorial) added two goals and an assist to move into a tie for second in single-season points with 61. Hayes also moved up into second in single-season goals with 42 courtesy of his seventh straight multi-goal game and his 12th of the season.

In spite of the semifinal setback, Robert Morris posted a school-record 11 wins in 2012 and earned its second national ranking in program history. The Colonials also defeated two ranked opponents for the first time ever and are once again leading the nation in scoring offense as they are set to achieve that feat for the third-consecutive season.
