Kenneth "Bear" Davis embarks on his sixth season as the head coach of the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team. Since being named the program's first head coach in 2004, Davis has spent the past four seasons building the Colonials from the ground up.
His instruction and guidance have been evident in the team's development over the past five seasons, as each year his team becomes stronger and a bigger threat against opponents. This past season Davis coached his team to its first ever winning season with a 9-7 record and notable wins over formidable opponents. RMU's success started in its home opener when the Colonials defeated Penn State in overtime, which began to a six-game winning streak. In addition, Davis directed his team to RMU's first ever league wins with victories over Drexel and Sacred Heart.
Davis' success in 2009 evolved from a breakthrough season in 2007 when he registered his first victories over Division I opponents with wins over VMI and Wagner. In 2008, he led his squad to even better results, earning five wins over Division I opponents and falling short in four games by just one goal, with two of those contests being against nationally-ranked and NCAA participant Hofstra and NCAA participant Canisius.
Throughout Davis's coaching career at Robert Morris, he has helped develop six players that were named to the CAA All-Rookie Team and two players that were named to the All-CAA Second Team.
Before being named the head coach at Robert Morris, Davis was key factor in the start of Wheeling Jesuit's men's lacrosse program. Davis took the Cardinals from a 2-11 record in the first year of the program in 2000 to an 8-4 record and a No. 10 national ranking in 2003. The Cardinals also had four players named to the All-Independent First Team in 2003, including Jeremy Johnson, who was the first player in Wheeling Jesuit lacrosse history to score 100 career goals. Johnson also was named a second team All-American, while goalie Nick Asmo was named an honorable mention All-American.
Prior to Wheeling Jesuit, Davis spent the 1999 season as a graduate assistant coach with Division III Marietta College. Between May and July of 2002, Davis was the assistant coach of the Czech Republic men's national lacrosse team, where he helped coach the team in the 2002 Prague Cup as well as the 2002 ILF World Games in Australia.
Away from the field as a coach, Davis founded and is the director of Big Shot Lacrosse, an organization that has held camps, clinics and tournaments throughout the Midwest since 1999.
A native of Hilliard, Ohio, Davis is a 1997 graduate of Wilmington College, in Wilmington, Ohio, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. Davis also received his teacher's certificate from Wright State University in 1998.
He and his wife, Marissa, reside in Moon Township, Pa., with their children, Sadie, Matthew and Kaiden
