Moon Township, Pa.-Sophomore Toba Bolaji (Vaughn, Ontario / Maple), a member of the Robert Morris University men's soccer team, was selected to the 2010 ESPN Academic All-District II First Team. Bolaji will now move on to the national ballot where he has a chance to be named to the ESPN Academic All-America Team. The ESPN Academic All-America program is run by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and is voted upon by the members of that organization.
Bolaji carries a 3.96 grade point average in biology and is on the pre-med track at RMU. A sophomore, he has been a two-year starter in goal for the Colonials.
"It's great that he is earning this as a sophomore. I have faith that he will continue to maintain his grades and he is going to become a much better goalie as an upperclassman. Hopefully then, in a couple years, he'll be able to become an All-American, both academically and athletically," said head coach Bill Denniston.
Bolaji leads the Northeast Conference (NEC) in saves (86) and is third all-time at RMU with 10 career shutouts in just two seasons. He is third in the conference in save percentage (.819) and fourth in goals against average (1.08) while his five shutouts this season tie him for second-most among NEC netmiders. The sophomore has allowed more than one goal in just three games this season.
As a freshman, Bolaji finished with five shutouts while allowing just 11 goals, the fewest amount of goals allowed in team history. His 0.91 goals against average was 1/100th shy of the single season mark set by Doug Petras in 1993.
To be nominated for ESPN Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form. District II is comprised of Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
