Moon Township, Pa. / North
Athletic Complex -The Robert Morris University men's soccer team
played an even match with #25 Monmouth at North Athletic Complex Friday, but in
the end, it was the visiting Hawks who left with the 1-0 victory. The Colonials
slip to 4-10-1 on the year and 0-8 in Northeast Conference play while the Hawks
improve to 12-4 and hold on to first place in the league at 6-2.
The first good chance and
the game's only goal both came in the 16th minute Friday. Monmouth's Ryan Clark
stood over an indirect kick 35 yards away from the RMU goal. He played a hard,
low ball into the center of the box where Anthony Vazquez left his feet and
knocked a sliding score into the right-side netting the give the Hawks the
lead.
The Colonials only
opportunity of the first half came five minutes later on an impressive
individual effort by sophomore Prince Samuels (Saint Catherine, Jamaica
/ Kingston College). He dribbled through a pair of Monmouth defenders, but his
shot from the left side of the box was right at Hawks keeper Alex Blackburn.
RMU had a fantastic chance immediately off of the second
half kickoff. A ball deep to the top of the Monmouth box was mishandled by a
Hawks defender. Freshman Devon Williams (Kingston, Jamaica / Jamaican National
Team) was the first to the loose ball, but his open shot from 14 yards away sailed
high over the net.
The Colonials failed to generate another real scoring
opportunity in the game despite launching four more shots toward the Hawks net.
RMU junior keeper Toba Bolaji (Vaughan, Ontario / Maple) had three saves for
RMU while Blackburn had one stop.
The Hawks held a 12-9 advantage in shots and a 13-4 edge
in corner kicks.
Robert Morris closes out its home schedule Sunday, Oct.
30, when Mount St. Mary's visits North Athletic Complex for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
