Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex-The Robert Morris University men's soccer team saw its 2011 home schedule
come to a close with a 1-0 loss against Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon at
North Athletic Complex. The Colonials slip to 4-11-1 overall and 0-9 in
Northeast Conference games while the Mount improves to 8-6-2 and 5-3-1 in
league games.
A bevy of chances for the Colonials were turned away by
the Mountaineers early in the contest. A blast from 10 yards out by Derek Stein
(Wapwallopen, Pa. / Crestwood) was deflected out of play by a defender. The
ensuing corner saw a touch by Tyler Gardner (Whitefish, Mont. / Whitefish) beat
Mount keeper Peter Steve only to be cleared off the goal line by a defender.
The flurry ended when Shane Beharry (Scarborough, Ontario / York University)
fired a point blank shot on a loose ball that Steve managed to get a hand on
and push aside. All of those chances came in less than a minute of play.
Zoncher Dennis, the league's leading scorer, added to his
season total in the ninth minute with a wide open header from the center of the
box that he buried to the right side. The score was set up by the play and
cross from Ian Hendrie along the left wing.
An innocuous chance turned dangerous in the 40th minute
when Luca Campos (Monaca, Pa. / Center) ripped a right-footed shot that was curling
to the right post. Steve extended and just got enough of the shot with his
right hand to steer it wide of the post.
Another fortunate stop by Steve prevented the Colonials
from getting on the board just 40 seconds into the second half. Again it was
Beharry who had his point blank shot thwarted by the Mount keeper.
Robert Morris outshot the Mount 15-12, but eight saves
from Steve and one by a teammate kept RMU off the board. Junior Toba Bolaji
(Vaughan, Ontario / Maple) finished with six saves for the Colonials, who were
forced to play a man down for the game's final 30 minutes.
The Colonials close out the 2011 campaign next Sunday,
Nov. 6, at Saint Francis (Pa.). Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
