The Colonials are making their fifth straight appearance in the NEC Tournament semifinals and 16th overall thanks to an 87-68 victory over No. 6 seed Monmouth (3/1/12) in quarterfinal action at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced RMU with 25 points against the Hawks, establishing an NEC Tournament single-game record with eight three-pointers. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones registered his first career double-double against Monmouth with 12 points and 10 assists, while off the bench freshman forward Lucky Jones contributed 16 points and seven rebounds and sophomore guard Anthony Myers supplied 12 points and four assists.
Quick Stat of the Night - Led by redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams, Robert Morris tied a single-game school record and established a new Northeast Conference Tournament mark by burying 16 three-pointers in an 87-68 victory over No. 6 seed Monmouth (3/1/12) in the 2012 quarterfinals. Williams finished with eight three-pointers and was one of five different Colonials to convert from long range. RMU has finished with 16 three-pointers in a game on four different occasions, the most recent coming in a 87-81 setback @ Syracuse (3/18/08) in the first round of the 2008 MasterCard NIT. In two seasons under head coach Andrew Toole the Colonials own a record of 9-1 (.900) when hitting at least 10 three-pointers in a game.
Sunday's Opponent and The All-Time Series - Robert Morris and Wagner will meet on the hardwood for the 60th time Sunday, with the Colonials holding a 35-24 (.593) edge in the all-time series. In the only meeting between the two programs during the 2011-12 regular season, the Seahawks jumped out to a 14-2 lead en route to an 80-69 victory at the Spiro Sports Center (2/2/12) on Staten Island, N.Y. RMU was led by freshman guard Brandon Herman, who scored 11 points off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, while sophomore forward Mike McFadden added 10 points and six rebounds.
Long Distance Dialing - Thanks to tying an RMU single-game record for three-pointers with 16 in an 87-68 victory over Monmouth (3/1/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament, the Colonials pushed their season total in three-point field goals on the 2011-12 campaign to 207. It marks the eighth time in the last nine seasons that Robert Morris has eclipsed 200 three-pointers in a season. The top two sharpshooters from long range for RMU this year have been redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams and redshirt junior guard Velton Jones, who have combined for 129 three-pointers. That total is the fifth highest by an RMU tandem in school history.
Experience Counts - Robert Morris continues the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament Sunday @ No. 2 seed Wagner with a roster that is loaded with experience in postseason play. Of RMU's 14 active players on its 2011-12 roster, six have played at least four NEC Tournament contests in their respective careers. In fact, the Colonials enter the semifinals of the 2012 NEC Tournament with a combined 38 career games of experience in the postseason. A look at how four key players have played for RMU in the NEC Tournament on their respective careers ...
* Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones, a member of the 2011 All-NEC Tournament Team, recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and tying a career high with 10 assists in an 87-68 victory over Monmouth (3/1/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 NEC Tournament ... In seven career games of the NEC Tournament, Jones has averaged 14.1 points, 4.9 assists and 2.1 steals per contest ... Jones has scored in double figures in six of his seven career NEC Tournament games and has shot 78.2 percent (25-for-32) at the stripe.
* Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams established an NEC Tournament single-game record with eight three-pointers in an 87-68 win over Monmouth (3/1/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 NEC Tournament and in four career games in the postseason has averaged 17.0 points per contest while shooting 66.7 percent (14-for-21) from beyond the arc.
* Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson, like Jones a member of the 2011 All-NEC Tournament, has averaged 8.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in seven career NEC Tournament tilts while shooting 46.7 percent (21-for-45) from the field.
* Junior forward Lijah Thompson has shot 60 percent (18-for-30) from the field in seven career NEC Tournament games and has scored in double figures three times.
The 500 Club - Thanks to a game-high 29 points @ Quinnipiac (2/25/12) in the 2011-12 regular-season finale, redshirt junior guard Velton Jones became the seventh different Colonial in school history to eclipse the 500-point plateau in a season. Jones, a 2012 All-NEC First Team selection, enters the semifinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament averaging a team-high 16.4 points per game and has scored 524 points so far this year. That total is good enough to rank ninth in the Robert Morris single-season record book. Jones is just seven points shy of moving into eighth place, and his 524 points are the most by a Colonial since former guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) scored 585 points in helping lead Robert Morris to the 2009 NEC Tournament championship. Jones also owns a team-high 143 assists this season, which ranks as the 10th highest total in single-season history. Jones is the only Colonial in school history to own top 10 totals in both points and assists in the same season.
Golden Era - While Robert Morris is in the midst of its golden era in the 36-year history as a Division I program, an area that gets credit for that success is RMU's ability to convert from beyond the arc. Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams owns a team-high 73 three-pointers so far this season, which ranks seventh in the RMU single-season record book. Williams is the eighth different Colonial in the last 11 years to post one of the top 10 single-season marks in three-point field goals.
Dishing The Dimes - A key reason the Colonials enter the semifinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament with a record of 11-3 (.786) in their last 14 games has been due to the job RMU's two point guards, redshirt junior Velton Jones and sophomore Anthony Myers, have done in creating offense. In the last 14 contests, the duo have dished out 126 assists against just 59 turnovers, an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.14. Myers has been extremely efficient, posting 52 dimes against just 17 miscues (3.06 assist-to-turnover ratio). Myers enters Sunday's game ranked third in the Northeast Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.76), while Jones ranks fourth (1.72).
