Columbus, Ohio - Despite falling behind 3-0 after one quarter of play against nationally-ranked Ohio State, the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team came fighting back and rallied to produce a 9-7 upset victory over the Buckeyes Friday evening at a clear and cold Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The win comes two years to the day after Robert Morris' first-ever triumph over Ohio State and gives RMU its second straight victory in the series between the Colonials and the Buckeyes.

RMU's triumph is also its second win over a nationally-ranked opponent in its last eight regular-season, non-conference games.

The win by Robert Morris was made possible by a strong performance between the pipes and an extremely-balanced offensive effort.

Redshirt junior Dillon Pope (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) earned the start in net and came up big as he posted a game-high 13 saves along with a career-high and game-best eight ground balls. Pope's save total was one off of his career high, but it did represent his highest ever total in a road contest. Pope also helped limit the Buckeyes to just one man-up goal in five extra-man situations.

Robert Morris' nine goals were scored by eight different Colonials as senior Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) had the squad's lone multi-goal game.

Matisz scored the opening and closing goals of the second half to become the fifth Colonial to collect 70 career goals. In the process, he notched the 32nd multi-point game and the 18th multi-goal outing of his career while extending his point streak to 12 games, 11 of which have been multi-point efforts.

Senior Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) and junior Jake Hayes (Calgary, Alberta / Central Memorial) joined Matisz in putting a pair of points on the board Friday as each tallied one score and one helper with the former notching the game-winning goal.

Buchanan's points were especially meaningful as he became the seventh Colonial in program history to reach 100 career points with his feat. Buchanan, who has tallied eight multi-point efforts in his last 10 affairs, continued to close in on RMU's all-time assist record and also moved into a tie for seventh in career goals for the Colonials.

Hayes, the national leader in shooting percentage at the beginning of the week, has now tallied multiple points in each game this season.

Freshman midfielder Chris Barney (Cheshire, Conn. / Bridgeton Academy) had the best performance of his young career as he went 9-for-15 on faceoffs and also claimed his first-career point when he assisted on a second-quarter goal. Barney reset season highs for faceoffs won and faceoff winning percentage.

Ohio State controlled much of the opening quarter, spreading out a trio of goals while limiting the Colonials' chances to take a 3-0 edge after 15 minutes.

However, RMU woke up from its slow start quickly once the second quarter was underway. Robert Morris immediately flipped the game on its head as it scored four times within a 3:09 span to take its first lead of the day, fewer than five minutes into the second.

Hayes, redshirt senior Kevin Brownell (Burlington, Ontario / Central), junior Connor Martin (Maumee, Ohio / St. John's Jesuit) and senior Teddy Finnegan (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) scored four consecutive goals to put RMU ahead.

Redshirt junior Dave Morton (Orangeville, Ontario / Hill School) assisted on the opening goal while Barney fed Finnegan for his tally.

The Buckeyes were finally able to stop the Colonial run and restore some normalcy to the affair. Ohio State retook the lead, 5-4, with back-to-back goals the latter of which was a man-up tally with just under five minutes to play in the opening half.

Holding the ball during the final minutes of the half, RMU was able to net the equalizer with just eight ticks left when freshman Jacob Ruest (Cornwall, Ontario / The Hill Academy) found the twine courtesy of Buchanan, sending the game into halftime knotted, 5-5.

Matisz scored just eight seconds into the second half to put RMU back in front and senior Casey Abbott (San Jose, Calif. / Bellarmine Prep.) doubled the Colonial advantage just over three minutes later.

Ohio State responded with back-to-back goals of its own during the middle portion of the frame and evened the game, 7-7, with 6:21 left in the third.

However, the Colonials then shut the door for the remainder of the contest as they held Ohio State scoreless for more than 20 minutes to close out the game.

Buchanan scored what proved to be the game-winner in closing minutes of the third and Matisz added an insurance goal just over three minutes into the fourth.

Pope made some key saves during the final stanza and was then aided by his teammates in the waning moments as RMU did not even allow the Buckeyes a single shot during the game's final four minutes, sealing the upset for the visitors.

RMU posted a 33-26 advantage in ground balls.

Abbott notched his 30th-career point while Morton extended his point streak to a career-best five games.

Junior Ben Lewis (Cazenovia, N.Y. / Cazenovia Central) notched a pair of caused turnovers to become the seventh Colonial in program history to hit 30 for his career in that category.

With the win, Robert Morris has now won four of its first five games that have come away from home this season.

RMU will continue its second three-game roadtrip of the season next weekend. The Colonials will play at Hobart for the first time in school history Saturday, March 17. The opening faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
