Top Story - The Robert Morris University men's basketball team continues play in the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. tip against Toledo at Savage Arean in Toledo, Ohio. The Colonials advanced to the second round of the 2012 CIT thanks to a 67-60 victory @ Indiana State (3/13/12), using a 16-3 run in the second half to turn a 10-point deficit into a three-point advantage en route to the win. Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams led RMU against the Sycamores with 11 points, converting four of his six shots from the field, including a 3-for-4 performance from beyond the arc. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones added 10 points and eight assists in the victory, while redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson recorded nine points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Robert Morris is making its fourth postseason appearance in the last five years by taking part in the 2012 CIT, as the Colonials appeared in the NIT in 2008 while earning back-to-back berths in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and 2010.
Quick Stat of the Night - Robert Morris will play its 36th game of the 2011-12 campaign Saturday @ Toledo, which will establish a new single-season team record. Breaking records is something that has become commonplace for the Colonials, as over the last five seasons RMU has rewritten its record book. By playing in its 36th game Saturday against the Rockets, it will mark the 116th school record, either team or individual, that Robert Morris has been broken in the last five years. Coincidentally, the Colonials enter the second round of the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament having posted an overall record of 116-55 (.678) since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, a school and Northeast Conference record for victories over a five-year span. A win over the Rockets Saturday would also tie RMU's single-season record for victories of 26.
Saturday's Opponent and The All-Time Series - Robert Morris has never squared off against Toledo on the hardwood in its 36-year Division I history, as Saturday's game marks the inaugural meeting between the two programs. The Rockets are the fifth team that RMU faces for the first time in school history in 2011-12, joining Philly Hoop Group Classic participants Penn (11/19/11) and La Salle (11/25/11), Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11) and Hampton (12/20/11). RMU is 3-1 (.750) so far this season against opponents its facing off with for the first time, falling to the Quakers before rebounding to earn victories over the Explorers, Ragin' Cajuns and Pirates.
The Comeback Kids - Robert Morris continues play in the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament proving no lead is safe for its opponent. In seven of their last nine road tilts, the Colonials have fallen behind by double digits, coming back to win four of them. In a 67-60 win @ Indiana State (3/13/12) in the first round of the 2012 CIT, RMU fell behind by 12 in the first half, 21-9, as well faced double-digit deficits seven times in the first eight minutes of the second half before roaring back for the victory. The win @ Indiana State marked the fourth time this season the Colonials have climbed out of a double-digit deficit for a victory and ninth time RMU has turned the trick in two seasons under head coach Andrew Toole. Included in that stretch is a 15-point deficit in the second half of an 81-73 overtime win @ Monmouth (1/21/12).
A Special Season - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones became the seventh different Colonial in school history to eclipse the 500-point plateau earlier this season and enters Saturday's game with 569 points this year, which ranks fourth in the RMU single-season record book . Jones, both a 2012 All-Northeast Conference First Team and 2012 All-NEC Tournament Team selection, needs just four points to move into third place, and his 569 points are the most by a Colonial since former guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) scored 585 in helping lead Robert Morris to the 2009 NEC Tournament championship. Even with his ability to score, Jones also owns a team-high 157 assists this season, which ranks as the fifth highest total in single-season history. Jones is the only Colonial in school history to own top five totals in both points and assists in the same season.
Long Distance Dialing - Thanks to tying an RMU single-game record for three-pointers with 16 in an 87-68 victory over Monmouth (3/1/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament, the Colonials eclipsed 200 three-pointers on the year and enter Saturday's game with 225. It marks the eighth time in the last nine seasons that Robert Morris has eclipsed 200 three-pointers in a season. The top two sharpshooters from long range for RMU this year have been redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams and redshirt junior guard Velton Jones, who have combined for 139 three-pointers. That total is the third highest by an RMU tandem in school history.
Golden Era - While Robert Morris is in the midst of its golden era in the 36-year history as a Division I program, an area that gets credit for that success is RMU's ability to convert from beyond the arc. Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams owns a team-high 81 three-pointers so far this season, which ranks fifth in the RMU single-season record book. Williams, who is the third player in the last four years to hit at least 80 three-pointers in a season, is the eighth different Colonial in the last 11 years to post one of the top 10 single-season marks in three-point field goals.
Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by second-year head coach Andrew Toole, who will coach his 68th game Saturday @ Toledo in the second round of the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. In his 67 games on the sidelines, RMU has held its opponents to 70 points or less in 46 contests, an amazing 68.7 percent of the time. The Colonials own a record of 37-9 (.804) in those games, including a mark of 20-1 (.952) when holding their opponents to less than 60 points.
Rockin The Chalk - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones leads Robert Morris in scoring this season with an average of 16.3 points per game, and no Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better. In a 71-64 win @ No. 2 Wagner (3/4/12) in the 2012 NEC Tournament semifinals, Jones finished 14-for-16 at the charity stripe, the 11th time this season he has visited the chalk at least 10 times. In 2011-12, Jones has established new RMU school records for free throws in a season (201) and career (391). Jones broke the career record thanks to a 5-for-7 performance at the charity stripe in a 67-60 victory @ Indiana State (3/13/12) in the first round of the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, including a 4-for-4 showing in the final 23 seconds to seal the win. Amazingly, 35.3 percent (201-of-569) of the points scored this season for Jones and 31.6 percent (391-for-1,237) of his career points have come at the free-throw line.
