Moon Township, Pa. - Junior Casey Folga (Erie, Pa. / Harborcreek) of the Robert Morris University women's track & field team was honored by the Northeast Conference Thursday for her performance on the field and in the classroom, as she was named the 2012 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's indoor track & field.
Folga is the second female student-athlete from Robert Morris to earn the accolade, joining former Colonial Nicole Downing (2001-05), who won the award in 2004.
To be eligible for the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a sport, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours, maintained a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 and participated with distinction as a member of a varsity team. An early childhood education major, Folga owns a cumulative GPA of 3.93 through the 2012 spring semester.
At the 2012 NEC Indoor Track & Field Championships held in Landover, Md., in February, Folga claimed the individual championship in the pole vault thanks to a leap of 3.48 meters (11'5"), establishing a new school record.
Folga's victory in the pole vault at the 2012 NEC Indoor Track & Field Championships marked her second title in the event, as she also won the individual title at the 2011 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
In addition to the honor for Folga, a total of 51 student-athletes from Robert Morris covering four winter sports were named to the 2012 NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for the honor roll, student-athletes must have posted a cumulative GPA of 3.20 and be an active member of an officially recognized varsity team. Freshmen are eligible for the honor roll.
Of RMU's 51 student-athletes to be named to the 2012 NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll, 20 were tabbed to the NEC Winter Commissioner's Honor Roll. To garner the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.75, and freshmen are eligible for the honor roll.
