Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University softball head coach Craig Coleman, M.D., announced the signing of Rachael Sechi (Sydney, Australia / Brigidine College St Ives) to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) Tuesday.

Sechi, who will enroll at RMU this coming fall, was one of the top hitters on an Australian Junior National Team that finished fourth in the world at the 2011 International Softball Federation (ISF) Junior Women's World Championship this past December.

"We are very excited to be able to add Rachael to our team this fall," Coleman said. "She brings a great deal of experience to our program, including having played in very high-level international competition. We look forward to welcoming our first 'Aussie' softball player with open arms."

Sechi, who has played as a catcher and an outfielder as well as a utility player, has been a member of the Australian Junior National Team since 2009 and attended her first junior world championship six months ago in Cape Town, South Africa. Sechi hit .444 with a .520 on-base percentage, ranking among the top 20 players in the tournament in both categories, while playing every game in the event for Australia. She collected a double and a single against Team USA and was also intentionally walked by the reigning Women's College World Series co-Most Outstanding Player Dallas Escobedo. Australia finished 6-1 in pool play, including a victory over eventual bronze-medalist Chinese Taipei, before it fell to the United States, 7-4, in the playoff portion of the tournament.

Sechi had also competed in prior international events for her country. She was the starting catcher on the Australian team that won the 2010 International Friendship Series and was awarded the Australian Coaches' Award at the 2010 International Challenge on the winning U-19 team. She also participated as a visiting athlete at an Australian Institute of Sport camp and trained alongside members of the Australian National Team.

Sechi has also played in a number of domestic competitions and has performed admirably. She represented the state of New South Wales from 2008 to 2012 and won five consecutive national championships at the U-16 and U-19 levels. She hit .407, .419 and .477 in each of the last three U-19 national championships while also serving as the vice-captain of the squad in 2012.

Sechi will become the third international student-athlete that Coleman has brought into the program during his tenure as head coach.

Sechi's signing completes Coleman's class of 2016 as she joins a quartet of Colonials that had signed in November. Kristen Gabelt (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley), Ashley Gerhart (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny), Lauren Hackett (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler Area) and Haileigh Stocks (Jamison, Pa. / Central Bucks South) had all previously signed with RMU, and the quintet will join the Colonials for the 2012-13 academic year.

RMU registered a program-record 35 wins in 2012, including posting a 15-5 mark in NEC play to claim first place in the conference for the second-consecutive season. The Colonials also broke the school record for road wins (14) and led the league in ERA (1.84) and ranked second in runs scored (102) during NEC play.
