PITTSBURGH, Pa. – March 13, 2014 – Two members of the Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team earned All-Conference honors in a release published by Atlantic Hockey on Thursday. Junior forward Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) was named to the All-AHA First Team while sophomore goaltender Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) earned a spot on the All-AHA Third Team.
After placing just one student-athlete on an all-conference team in the previous two seasons, Robert Morris (15-17-5, 13-9-5 AHA) placed multiple student-athletes on teams for just the second time since the program joined Atlantic Hockey for the 2010-11 season.
Wydo earned a spot on the first team after a regular season in which he set a single-season program record with 23 goals, surpassing the previous record of 22 held by Ryan Cruthers from the 2007-08 season. Wydo's 23 goals were also the most in the AHA during the regular season and was the fourth-highest total in the NCAA. Of his 23 goals, just five came on the power-play while he also recorded a shorthanded goal and two game-winning goals in 34 games played.
Wydo was one of just four student-athletes in the NCAA to record multiple hat tricks in the regular season, accomplishing the feat in back-to-back games against Penn State and RIT. With four goals against Penn State on Nov. 1, Wydo became one of four student-athletes in the NCAA this season to have a four-goal game. Wydo's output against the Nittany Lions matched the single-game program record at Robert Morris that was originally set by Nathan Longpre during the 2009-10 season against Quinnipiac.
Along with his 23 goals, Wydo also recorded 17 assists for a total of 40 points, the fourth-highest point total in the AHA and 13th-highest in the NCAA. Including the first round of the AHA playoffs, Wydo has pushed his single-season record goal total to 25 while also adding 20 assists for 45 points. The 45 points are the second-most in program history over a single season, leaving Wydo four points shy of tying the RMU record of 49 held by Cruthers from the 2007-08 season.
Wydo strung together a five-game scoring streak from Jan. 25 until he was held off the board on Feb. 13. Along with his scoring streak, Wydo produced a six-game and an eight-game point streak this season. Wydo's six-game streak included nine goals and two assists and came at the beginning of the season and spanned from Oct. 19 until he was held without a point on Nov. 16. Wydo produced his eight-game streak towards the end of the season that was comprised of six goals and nine assists and started on Jan. 25 and went until he didn't record a point on Feb. 22.
In his three seasons at Robert Morris, Wydo has accumulated 98 career points and is just two points shy of becoming the fourth Colonial in program history to reach the 100-point plateau. Of his 98 points, 59 of them have been goals, a number that ranks Wydo second all-time at Robert Morris and just five goals shy of the career record of 64 held by Chris Margott. With just two more assists in his career, Wydo – who currently has 39 assists – will enter the top ten at Robert Morris. Wydo already has three career records to his name at RMU, recording the most game-winning goals (12), the most shorthanded goals (4), and maintaining the highest plus-minus rating (+35) in program history.
Wydo becomes the first Colonial to earn all-AHA First Team honors since the 2010-11 season when Longpre and Denny Urban earned the honors. Prior to the first team honors, Wydo was honored by the AHA twice with Player of the Week honors (Nov. 5 and Feb. 4).
During the regular season, Shafer compiled an overall record of 13-14-5 with a 2.96 goals-against average, a .914 save percentage, and two shutouts. Shafer played in over 84 percent of RMU's season, the third-highest percentage of any goaltender in the league this season. Shafer's goals-against average and save percentage ranked him fifth amongst goaltenders in the AHA during the 2013-14 campaign.
With 13 victories, Shafer was one of just five goaltenders in the AHA to record double-digit victories over the duration of the season and finished the season with the third-highest win total in the AHA. Shafer was one of five goaltenders to record multiple shutouts during the regular season; the other four were all freshman netminders.
Against AHA opponents, Shafer saw an improvement in his statistics, posting a record of 13-7-5 with two shutouts to go along with a 2.64 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. Shafer's .919 save percentage in conference games ranked him fifth in the AHA while he also ranked fifth in conference with a .620 winning percentage.
On Dec. 27 in the first game of the 2013 Three Rivers Classic, Shafer turned away a program-record 59 shots despite suffering a 3-2 loss to Penn State.
Shafer guided Robert Morris to a program-best nine-game unbeaten streak that spanned from Jan. 10 until a loss on Feb. 13. During that time, Shafer compiled a 7-0-2 record with a 1.96 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage.
On Jan. 31 against Army, Shafer recorded his first-career point, a power-play assist as he went on to shut out the Black Knights, 4-0. Shafer's other shutout this season would come five games later when he would blank Niagara while making 44 saves in a 5-0 victory.
Including his play in the first round of the AHA Playoffs against Army, Shafer's 14 wins are the third-most in a single season at Robert Morris while he is just 29 saves away from becoming just the second Colonial to record 1,000 saves in a season, joining Eric Levine who made 1,148 saves last year. As a sophomore, Shafer's three career shutouts are the second most in program history.
Prior to earning the All-AHA Third Team honors, Shafer was recognized as the league's Goaltender of the Week in three consecutive weeks spanning from Feb. 4 to Feb. 18. Shafer becomes just the second RMU goaltender to earn All-AHA honors, joining Brooks Ostergard who also was named to the All-AHA Third Team for the 2010-11 season.
Robert Morris returns to action on Friday with its first game in the AHA Quarterfinals on the road against Connecticut. The best-of-three series will also take place on Saturday and Sunday if a third game is needed. All games are scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m.
