Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University softball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end with a pair of losses, 1-0 and 9-2, to Northeast Conference opponent Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon at North Athletic Complex. The Colonials slip to 17-29 overall and 7-5 in NEC games while the Pioneers improve to 18-26 and 8-4 in the league.
It seems only appropriate that seniors
Jordan Gurganus and
Stacey Capp led the day offensively after celebrating Senior Day prior to first pitch. Gurganus went 4-of-7 and scored a run while Capp collected three hits in her seven plate appearances.
Abrielle McCartney also had a multi-hit day going 2-of-6 with a run batted in.
In the first game,
Kaitlin Ellzy allowed just two hits over seven innings, but she ran into trouble in the first. After an error allowed the leadoff batter to reach, she hit the next Pioneer putting runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt was followed by a Victoria D'Addario single that brought in Lauren Delgadillo for the game's only run.
The Colonials best opportunity to score came in the fifth inning after
Kristen Pray reached on an error and was moved to second with a sacrifice bunt.
Jordan Gurganus beat out an infield single before stealing second giving RMU runners on second and third with no outs. Sacred Heart's Jamie Carlson wiggled out of the jam, however, inducing a pop up and striking out the final batter to escape the jam unharmed.
Ellzy was the hard luck loser allowing just two hits and walking one in the complete game effort. Carlson was her match, however, as she spread out five hits and struck out five for the shutout.
The Pioneers would get off to a hot start again in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Katleyn Christian did the majority of damage with a two-run double to left center. When Kristen McCann followed with a run scoring double, that ended the afternoon for RMU starter
Laura Coulter. McCann homered in the third inning to stretch the Pioneers lead to 6-0.
Robert Morris finally got on the board in the bottom of the third.
Taryn Miller walked before Gurganus and Capp singled to load the bases.
Olivia Lorusso lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score one run before McCartney beat out an infield single to score another to make it 6-2.
The Pioneers added a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to cap off the 9-2 victory. RMU loaded the bases in the seventh but couldn't push any more runs across the plate.
The Colonials take on Wagner in a doubleheader makeup of Saturday's rain out.
